How to foster team spirit

Team spirit is important - not just if you're playing football but also at work. Why? Because team spirit is about a major engagement driver: the feeling of belonging.

In many offices today, employees sit in cubicles and communicate only briefly with each other. This means team spirit may be low. Employees work next to each other rather than with each other. Developing a sense of team spirit in your workplace increases employee happiness, satisfaction, motivation, and even productivity.

Humans are social creatures. That's why fostering team spirit is a great way to motivate employees.

Workout together

We know not everyone is #sporty but exercising together can still be a great way to create a sense of playful collaboration. You don't have to go for runs together during lunch. You could try out mini golf or bowling.

Besides fostering team spirit, you also encourage a healthy active lifestyle this way that shows employees that you care about them beyond what they do at work.

Go on a trip

Field trips, even if just for half a day, can work wonders when it comes to sparking engaging conversations among employees. Just the change in environment can enhance the connections between team members. Leave the confines of the office to visit a museum or local sightseeing places to get employees out of their typical work environment.

If budget allows, plan a longer trip with overnight stay that encourages relationship building.

Celebrate together

Celebrating together is a great way to build connections - not just because alcohol is involved. Celebrations create a positive setting that makes it easy for people to be relaxed and chat with each other casually. You can make a routine out of having cake together when it's a team member's birthday or schedule a lunch together when you've reached a tough team goal.

Acknowledge good work

Pride is such an important contributor to feeling valued at work. By making it a habit to praise team members for a job well-done, they will feel more comfortable and relaxed which is a fundamental driver to creating a great team atmosphere that focuses on the positive.

Steal the Swedish concept of Fika!

In Sweden, Fika is a big deal. It basically means that you take a break to have a coffee and small pastry. Swedes do this at least once a day, often more often. Sweden is also one of the countries with the best work-life balance and maybe it's all because of Fika!

By encouraging employees to take a break together and chat over a little bit of sugar rush, you can spark connections and enhance relationships a little bit every day.
