Phrasing the questions as open-ended queries is especially beneficial when you want to encourage reflection and trigger self-leadership.

Here's some inspiration for the next one on one with your team members.

What:

  • What would be the ideal outcome for you?
  • What is challenging about that?
  • What have you done, tried, or considered?
  • What worked, what didn’t, what did you learn?
  • What can you accomplish that doesn’t depend on others?

How:

  • How will you prepare for that?
  • How can I support you in reaching your goals?
  • How would you advice a colleague if they were in your shoes?
  • How have you handled something like this before?
  • How will we measure success?

Who:

  • Who will be impacted—positively or negatively—by these potential changes?
  • Who inspire you, colleagues, managers or someone else?
  • Who else could offer you feedback?
  • Who are the key people in making you reach your goals?
  • Who else do you think needs to be involved in this?

Where/When:

  • Where/when do you feel you are at your personal best?
  • When do you experience frustration, impatience, irritation etc.?
  • Where might you experience resistance?
  • Where would you like to be in your career in 3-5 years?
  • When are you going to start?
