There's the you who wears suits and sits in meetings. Then there's the you who loves to lift heavy in the gym and is a real family person. Most of us do it: We bring one part of ourselves to work and leave the rest at home. Research suggests it's time to change that.

Look at these powerful reasons why you should get your whole self involved in business:

People follow who they know. The more authentic, the better. Secrecy can come off as aloofness or arrogance. Authenticity creates space for vulnerability - one of the most valuable features a leader can have. An honest workplace is more effective.

Often, people hide their concerns because they fear the truth will be harmful to their careers. For example, you may not speak up about an unfair decision out of fear it may affect your next promotion. The problem is that this particular choice to be dishonest makes the workplace or the industry worse for everyone. It contributes to an environment where no one feels entitled to be human. Do you want to work like that? You'll find your fit.

Most people dislike change, and changing workplaces or industries can be particularly stressful. If you work in an environment where you feel the need to disguise who you really are, you're unlikely to succeed, and unlikely to be happy if you do. If you're in a career where you'll always be fighting against the norm, maybe it's time to consider a change. If a company doesn't enable you to be who you are, find one that does. You'll connect better with customers.

Clients who feel they can identify with you are, are more likely to do business with you. Being transparent about yourself gives you the chance to relate to customers more deeply. You'll be happier.

If you have an artistic personality but work in finance, you may not feel very happy at work. By talking to superiors and trying to find ways to bring your core self into your everyday work, you can boost motivation and performance. This ultimately means, you'll be more successful.
